The beginning in which we remind ourselves to watch and be vigilant and wait with hope for the coming of Christ! Our first readings are now full of prophecies from prophets born hundreds of years before Jesus Christ and our gospels are full of reminders to constantly watch and wait! I love the gentleness that Mary is showing Eve. Yes, Eve is a miserable sinner, clutching the forbidden fruit while the serpent wraps around her leg, binding her tight. But, look at the way that Mary treats her — cupping her head in her palm to comforting way. When my three-year-old daughter was upset and having trouble taking a nap about an hour ago, that is exactly what I did to comfort her so that she could relax and finally sleep.

Used with permission from the artist. I just love this picture. The image is powerful. Just look at their feet Gen. Mary is properly called therefore the bearer of salvation. A new Eve, and more than Eve, she held in her hands the life by which we receive life. While the comparison of Eve and Mary is interesting, it should not be pushed too far. Jesus is our Saviour—the giver of new life.
Both of us are feminist and ex-evangelical, but approach this painting in very different ways. I love it because it tells me things about sin and grace that touch me in a particular way.
